The Emma Maersk is HUGE! She is 1,302 feet long and 184 feet wide. She was put into service in 2006 and is one of eight owned by the A. P. Moller-Maersk Group. She weighs 170,974 tons and can carry 14,770 containers (TEU). Emma Maersk is powered by a Wärtsilä-Sulzer 14RTFLEX96-C engine capable of producing 109,000 HP. The downside? She burns 1,660 every hour. Her top speed is 25.5 knots (47.2 km/h; 29.3 mph) getting it across the Pacific Ocean in only 5 days. Get this, it only has a crew of 13 that runs the entire ship during voyage! Walmart commissioned her to get all their goods from China since 91% of Walmart products are made in China. It only cost Maersh around US $145,000,000. Check out the pictures below, and click on an image for full size.

Silicone painting applied to the ship bottom reduces water resistance and saves 317,000 gallons of diesel per year.

  1. Crazy size! It would be great to see that thing up close. I doubt it would fit into Southampton docks though Haha!
